Common Dog Behavioral Problems

Common Dog Behavioral ProblemsWhether you are new to owning a dog or are thinking about getting a dog, it is important to be knowledgeable about common behavioral problems dogs often exhibit. Fortunately, with obedience training and at-home training, most behavioral issues will be preventable or able to be controlled. However, it is always good to know what to look out for, as some behavioral issues are actually symptoms of something worse, which is when your vet Chicago can help.

Barking

Dogs bark; this is a normal behavior. However, excessive barking typically means that the dog is not well trained, if at all. The main causes of barking are warning/alert, playfulness, attention-seeking, anxiety, boredom, and responding to other dogs. If your dog is exhibiting excessive barking, address the issue now through basic training, exercise, and mental stimulation; if this does not work, talk to us!

Chewing and Chasing

Chewing and chasing are also normal behaviors for dogs; it is when it becomes excessive that dog owners need to take notice. Reasons for chewing include puppy teething, boredom, anxiety, and curiosity; by providing plenty of chew toys and exercise, your dog should be okay. As for chasing, taking preventative measures can ensure that your dog stays safe from moving vehicles and more. Keep your dog on a leash while outdoors and always train your dog to come when called!

Biting and Aggression

Due to the nature of a dog, they sometimes will bite because of pack mentality and instinct; puppies often do because of exploration. Dog owners must train their puppies that biting is not allowed through teaching bite inhibition; for more information on this, click here. As for aggression, which can present itself as growling, snarling, showing teeth, and more, a vet is the best way to go. Canine aggression is a serious issue, and it may even stem from a health problem.
