Welcome to Portage Park Animal Hospital

We’re proud of the care we provide, the animal and human lives we touch, and our commitment to this community.

Updates due to COVID-19

Even with the “Shelter in Place” order, we will still be here for your sick pet to the best of our abilities. The governor did dictate that veterinary care is considered an essential service. But we will need to reduce our hours in order to provide your pet with the best care in the safest conditions for you and our staff.

Starting March 21st, we will be open Monday – Saturday from 8am – 4pm. We need to make this change to ensure we can maintain proper staffing for the duration of this outbreak. During this time there may be longer wait times when you call us. Please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as we can. Also, be sure to check your pet’s medication supply now. If you’re going to run out within the next 2 weeks, plan to pick up more as soon as possible or use our online pharmacy.

Here are the protocols we are following to keep everyone safe:

  • We will only be seeing sick or emergency appointments. If your pet needs to be seen, please call us to schedule an appointment. We are also canceling all elective surgeries.
  • We are not doing in-person visits. Clients must now wait in their vehicles for the entire duration of their visit. Also, all pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. Please come to the parking lot in the back of the clinic. When you arrive, call us at 773-725-0260. We will take your pet’s information over the phone and then come to get your pet. The doctor will call you to discuss the treatment plan. We will then take your payment over the phone, and return your pet to you at your car. If you are having any flu-like symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19, do not bring your pet to the clinic. Have a healthy friend or family member bring your pet. The doctor can call you at home to discuss his/her care.
  • If you need to pick up medications or prescription food, please call us to confirm we have your medication ready for you. Again, please use our parking lot at the back of the clinic. We ask that you stay in your car, call us to make payment over the phone and then meet us at the door for pick up. Or use our online pharmacy.

Here are a few helpful resources during this time:

  • Use our online pharmacy. You can purchase your pet’s medication or prescription food and have it shipped directly to your home. Visit, create an account and place your order. We will be notified to approve your request and it will then be shipped to you directly.
  • Download our App. We are using the VitusVet app for easier access to your pet’s information. Please visit or go to your app store and search for “VitusVet: Pet Health Care App.” You will create your account using the email address we have on file for you. From this app, you can see your pet’s full medical records, schedule appointments and request medication refills. If do have to go to an emergency vet, you can easily share your pet’s medical records directly with them from this app.

We have been an independent veterinary clinic in this community for over 35 years. We will continue to be here for our neighbors as long as we’re permitted. Thank you for continuing to trust us with your pet’s care. We’ll keep you updated as things change.

One of the best animal hospitals I have ever visited! The staff is so patient, kind, and loving to my high energy pup. He loves all the staff there and he's the first dog I've ever had that likes going to the vet. All of the staff treats my fur baby like he's their own. They go above and beyond all of the time!
