Easy Way Into Chicago’s Dog-Friendly Areas

Published on April 19th, 2017

In Chicago, we have something called a DFA or Dog-Friendly Area. These are designated areas in the city where dogs are allowed to run, play and socialize off-leash. Before DFA’s you always had to have your pets leashed in the city. These areas also provide convenient features like drinking fountains, open areas and extra pet waste bags.

For access to the parks, all owners are required to get a permit and a tag for their dogs. It’s a simple and affordable process that ensures dogs and the people who love them stay safe and healthy. You can find assistance with the process at any of the Chicagoland participating veterinarian offices, such as Portage Park Animal Hospital.

The Permit Requirements

All dogs must have:

  • Proof of a current rabies vaccination.
  • Had an examination within the last year for contagious diseases.
  • Current vaccinations for Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, kennel cough, distemper, leptospirosis and hepatitis.
  • A negative fecal result within the past year.

Everyone with a dog inside a DFA must have a permit. That includes visitors, new and current residents. Luckily Portage Park Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic makes it easy for you and your pup to enjoy the parks.

How it Works

Once you’ve completed the process, you’ll receive a permit and a registration tag. It’s required to attach the tag to the dog’s collar or harness anytime you enter a Chicago Park District DFA. And you must carry the permit with you whenever you’re in the DFA.

If you’re found to be in violation of either of these rules, you may have to pay a fine up to $500. The fee for the permit and tag, on the other hand, is only $8.

If you’ve never taken advantage of Chicagoland’s Dog-Friendly Areas, you’re missing out. They are great, safe places to enjoy the day with your furry friend.

Portage Park Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic provides all the testing and documentation you’ll need to get your DFA permit and tag. You can get all the permits and tags you need through us, and if you do all your vaccinations and tests with us, the DFA permit and tag are free!
