How To Introduce A New Puppy To Your Dog At Home

Published on March 26th, 2020

Getting a new puppy is always an exciting time for any dog owner. However, if you already have an older dog at home, this can be a nervous and anxious experience for both of your pets.

Pre Introduction

There are a few steps you should take before introducing your pets. Firstly, you should always make sure the pup is up to date with all pet vaccinations in Chicago. Schedule an appointment with Portage Park to ensure your new dog is free of any ticks, fleas, heartworms, or any other condition that could transfer to your other dog at home.

After you’ve confirmed your new puppy is healthy, take these few precautions in your house. To avoid any territorial conflict, provide a separate food and water bowl for each pet. Make sure to put away any dog toys and allow both your dogs a space to escape to in case they feel intimidated.

Introducing The New Dog

In preparation for the introduction recruit helpers, a leash for each pet and treats to encourage positive behavior. Each dog should be leashed loosely by a separate person. Bring them to a neutral meeting place and allow any interaction your dogs are comfortable with to progress. Allow your dogs to exercise or play together if they choose. Reinforce positive behavior with a happy attitude and treats. If either dog becomes aggressive intervene immediately, separate them and try again tomorrow.

Post Introduction

Following the initial introduction, there are a few things to consider as your two dogs become acclimated with one another. First, never force your dogs to be in the same room and always supervise interactions to avoid bullying. Until your dogs have become comfortable with one another, be sure to feed them at the same time in separate rooms to limit competition.
