An investigation that has been ongoing since 2007, the Food and Drug Administration is continuing its research into jerky pet treats. Working with the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network, the FDA continues to look into the cause of these cases. They have recently updated its investigation to include the latest reports of illness, recent testing, and what measures the FDA has taken to reveal the culprit of these illnesses and deaths.
Fortunately, reported cases are now on the decline. From May 2014 to September 2014, there were 270 reported cases, while reported cases from September 2014 to December 2015 were at 200. This seems promising, as not only is that number lower, it is also for eleven more months of reported cases.
Jerky pet treats have been under investigation by the FDA since 2007, when they began to receive complaints of illnesses, along with canine deaths. Reported cases include jerky pet treats made of chicken, duck, or sweet potato, and have likely been imported from China. Most of the complaints are in regards to chicken jerky, but there have been complaints for the other types as well. The FDA released an Import Alert, which you can read here. Revised back in October 2015, it also includes poultry jerky pet treats.
The FDA wants to stress that these jerky pet treats are not a required part of a balanced diet for pets, and for pet owners to watch out for certain symptoms if their pet has been consuming jerky pet treats. These symptoms include decreased appetite and activity, any vomiting or diarrhea, and excessive thirst and/or urination. If you believe that your pet has been a victim of any jerky pet treats, report the case to the FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal.
