According to the American Humane Association, June is a month dedicated to adopting cats. If you are considering adopting a cat, there are some things that you should know before doing so in order to be prepared. Our veterinarian in Chicago wants to make the process as seamless as possible. Here’s what you can expect every step of the way.
Before You Adopt
As cats are rather territorial, it’s best to get them accustomed to their new space by providing a cat-friendly area for them. Set up a smaller space for them that includes a litter box and toys. Make sure that the feeding station, composed of a water dish and a food dish, are kept separately from the litter box. Step back and evaluate your home from a cats-eye view; cover any small holes they might be able to get into and if there are breakable items on tables or shelves, you may want to consider moving them to a safer area.
Once You Have Your Cat
Your cat will be completely changing environments, so let them adjust in their own time. If your cat isn’t interested in food, consider providing them the same brand of food they ate in their shelter to make the transition easier. Change their water on a regular basis and make sure to bring them to our veterinarian in Chicago for regular kitten wellness exams.These exams consist of things like physical health exams, vaccines, fecal exams, tests for viruses and deworming medication.
