October is Pet Adoption Month! Adopting a pet is a wonderful thing to do, as there is always a pet in need of adoption. If you have never had a pet before, or even if you have never adopted a pet before, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are many factors you will need to take into consideration before getting a pet. One of the most important factors is the behavior of the actual pet. As a rule, for new pet owners and new adopters, shelters will likely not let you adopt animals with too many behavioral problems. Before making a final decision on adoption, consider these factors.
Your Current Home
Whenever you are thinking about adding a pet to the home, consider your current situation. Do you have children? Other pets? Does your schedule accommodate having a pet? Does your place of residence allow pets? If you are adopting a pet, you need to assume you will need to spend time training them and getting them comfortable with your home and the people around them. You may want to consider which breed would be best for your lifestyle; additionally, understand that your lifestyle may need to be adjusted if you are not home enough for a pet.
Anytime you get a pet, it is a big step. Adoption is a great route to take, just understand that you may need to spend a bit more time with them to ensure that they feel comfortable.
Costs
Bringing a pet home will always come with costs, from their food to toys to grooming equipment. With adoption, each place is different, but you traditionally will pay an adoption fee that sometimes includes spaying/neutering and vaccinations. Either way, when you adopt a pet, you will want to bring them to see a veterinarian shortly thereafter. While there are costs associated with bringing a pet into your home, the benefits far outweigh what you will pay! Be sure to schedule an appointment once you have adopted your new addition!
