Pet Vaccinations

Published on August 24th, 2016

Here at Portage Park Animal Hospital and Dental Clinic, we provide pet vaccinations in Chicago, and can advise you on what vaccinations are the best for your specific pet. Vaccinations are a great way to ensure that your pet lives a long and happy life. Through the right vaccine, your pet is able to fight off the disease because their immune system has already been exposed to the antigens of the disease.

Core Vaccinations

Not every pet gets every single vaccination. This is why it is important to talk to your veterinarian for their recommendations. However, there are some core vaccines that are essential for all pets. For dogs, rabies, canine hepatitis, distemper, leptospirosis and canine parvovirus are the diseases that are seen as the “core” illnesses for vaccination. For cats, the diseases are feline distemper, feline calicivirus, rhinotrachetitis, and rabies.

There is also additional non-core vaccinations that are important tot discuss with your veterinarian. If you are bringing home a new kitten or puppy, contact our office to discuss our Wellness Plan for either. Pet vaccination in Chicago are extremely important, and the Wellness Plan is a money-saving way to ensure all of the necessary vaccinations are in place for your new addition.

Timing and Frequency

Depending on the pet and the vaccination, the schedule can differ. Your veterinarian will be able to determine the best course of action based on the medical history, lifestyle and environment, and age of your pet. Puppies and kittens often receive multiple vaccinations between six to sixteen weeks of age. Adult cats and dogs will likely receive additional revaccination annually or once every three years.
