Travel Safely With Your Pets

Published on June 16th, 2017

Summer is a season for traveling; whether you are planning a road trip or flying somewhere, you will need to decide if you are bringing your pet. If you decide not to, you will need to find a sitter, particularly if you have a dog. However, if you do decide to bring your pet along for the ride, there are some tips you will want to follow to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible while traveling.

On A Plane

Clearly, flying with a pet is much different than driving with one. Smaller pets are much better for air travel, but no matter what, make sure they are microchipped and have a collar with a travel tag. For air travel, try to always book a direct flight; not only is this more comfortable for your pet, you’ll have an easier flight as well! Set an appointment with your vet to be up to date on all vaccinations, and get a health certificate dated within ten days of your departure. If you are traveling internationally, give Portage Park Animal Hospital a call as soon as you know your travel plans. Requirements vary by country, so we can help you navigate through the process. For the actual trip, purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate, and always put food and water in the crate.

Road Tripping

For long drives, you will need to be prepared with your pet. Get them used to longer drives ahead of time, and if you are crossing state lines, bring their rabies vaccination record. If your pet will be in a carrier, make sure it is well ventilated and large enough to stand, sit, and lie down in. Traveling without a carrier? Keep them in the back seat, and don’t let them spend too much time with their head out the window. Bring all the necessities, such as a food, bowl, leash, waste scoop, grooming tools, medication, and more. Pack their favorite toy, and plan on stopping every couple of hours for your pet to get out and stretch, go to the bathroom, etc.

Summer Travel

You should always enjoy summer traveling, and bringing your pet along can make it even better! Ensure your pets’ safety with these tips, and have a great summer! Stop by Portage Park Animal Hospital prior to your trip for a check-up, any vaccinations, and their pet health certificate.
