Your Pet & Back-To-School Blues

Published on September 12th, 2019

It can be a tough family transition from a long fun-filled summer to back-to-school routines, especially for our furry friends. When the kids go back to school and we have less time on the weekends to entertain our pets, they can feel pretty lonely at times. Use these tips from our vet in Chicago to keep your pet happy this fall.

Keep Your Pet Calm

Pets can get anxious when left alone for long periods of time. Keep your pet calm by trying to not get them too riled up every time you say goodbye or hello. Give your pet some love calmly when you leave or enter the house to reinforce a limited emotional reaction. If your pet is more anxious than others, you can first try using a calming collar. A calming collar releases pheromones mimicking the ones mothers use naturally to calm their offspring down. This may be enough help for most pets. If their anxiety is worse than that we recommend you bring them into our vet in Chicago. There are medications that can help.

Keep Your Pet Occupied

Keep your pet busy by providing various toys they can use without your help. For dogs try a chew toy that dispenses treats or a wobbling toy that keeps your pup curious the more they play with it. For cats, our vet in Chicago recommends a scratching post or a self-automated laser toy to keep them entertained for hours. Consider enrolling your friend in daycare for even more socialization.

Don’t Forget Exercise

For dog owners especially, daily exercise should maintain a priority even when you have less time on your hands. Hiring a dog walker is a great option for busy families. Otherwise set aside at least 30 minutes per day to play fetch or take your dog on a walk.

These tips along with providing ample fresh food and drinking water for your pets will help them conquer their back-to-school blues. If you need any more advice on how to keep your pet happy during this time, contact Portage Park Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic today!
